Video: Crazy Ending To Wild Spurs Vs. Pistons Game
The Detroit Pistons and the San Antonio Spurs rang in the new year with an epic clash that required overtime to settle a winner. Not much was at stake, as the Pistons (6-28) and Spurs (14-21) are both well out of playoff contention, but nonetheless, the red-hot Hamidou Diallo and the rest of the Pistons squad put on a show in front of the hometown crowd.
The Pistons were outscored 29-20 in the opening quarter and trailed by 7 at halftime, but were able to mount a big 3rd quarter and had a chance to win the game late. Tied at 105-105, NBA sophomore Saddiq Bey committed an offensive foul instead and gave the Spurs the ball and a chance to win. With 3.2 seconds on the clock, they went for a lob play that nearly worked when Jock Landale made a beautiful pass to a streaking Keldon Johnson who just missed the contested layup.
In the opening minutes of overtime, both Bey and Diallo scored for Detroit, going on a 6-2 run in the process during the first half of the overtime period before a Bryn Forbes 3-pointer cut the lead to just 111-110.
Fast forward to the final 11.4 seconds, and the Pistons are forced to foul while trailing 115-114 following a number of near-misses around the rim. Derrick White goes 1 for 2 at the line leaving the door open for a tie or a win with a 3:
