NBA Rumors: 4 Names Are Likely Targets For Sacramento Kings Next Head Coach

After missing the playoffs for an NBA-record 16th consecutive season, it appears that the Sacramento Kings will not be bringing back interim head coach Alvin Gentry. That, according to NBA Insider Marc Stein, who also names four "likely candidates" for the Kings' job for 2022-23.

Veteran coaches Terry Stotts, Mike D’Antoni, Mike Brown and Steve Clifford will garner the Kings' interest, says Stein, though two of them are currently employed with other teams.

Neither Terry Stotts, the former long-time head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, nor Mike D'Antoni, are coaching this season, while Brown is currently an assistant under Steve Kerr with the Golden State Warriors, and Clifford is working under Steve Nash with the Brooklyn Nets.

Stein suggests that D'Antoni may be an interesting candidate, due to a previous relationship with Kings general manager Monte McNair. They recently worked together for four years in Houston.

The Kings enter the final weekend of the NBA season at 29-51, after re-tooling on the fly this season by making a huge deal at the trade deadline, featuring the acquisition of All-Star center Domantas Sabonis in return for up-and-coming star Tyrese Haliburton. Alvin Gentry was brought in on an interim basis after the Kings fired Luke Walton a way back in November.
