Wainright was previously on a two-way deal, but is now eligible to play in the playoffs for the Suns.
The 27-year-old has appeared in 44 games for Phoenix this season, playing 7.4 minutes per game.
Wainright went undrafted in 2017 after playing four seasons with the Baylor Bears.
After college, the 6-foot-6 forward tried his hand at football and signed with the Buffalo Bills in the NFL. However, he did not make the final cut.
The American-Ugandan played with clubs in Germany and France, from 2018 to 2020 before getting an opportunity with the Toronto Raptors during the 2021 offseason.
Toronto released him just prior to the start of the 2021-22 season, but was eventually picked up by the Suns on a two-way contract.
