This is absolutely brutal news for the Grizzlies.
Morant suffered the injury some time in Game 3. He came up limping midway through the fourth quarter, left the game, and did not return as the Golden State Warriors marched to a 142-112 blowout win last Saturday.
Morant subsequently missed Game 4, where the Grizzlies valiantly fought. Ultimately, they came up short in the end as Golden State managed to escape Monday night with a 101-98 come-from-behind win to take a 3-1 series lead.
Memphis faces elimination on Wednesday night when the Warriors visit town.
It is still unclear where Morant really suffered the injury. Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins alleged that Jordan Poole's yank on his point guard's knee in the fourth quarter caused it.
NBA Twitter also pointed out that Morant may have suffered the injury while bumping knees with Klay Thompson as he went for a close-out attempt on the perimeter.
The Grizzlies were able to put up a good fight in Game 4 without their franchise star and they did go 20-5 without the 2021-22 NBA Most Improved Player during the regular season. But without Morant, Memphis is essentially out of the hunt for the 2022 NBA championship.
