Lakers Guard Injured; Status For Regular Season In Question

The Los Angeles Lakers are heading into the season with four point guards. That logjam might be eased a bit, however, with the unfortunate news that free agent signee Dennis Schroder has injured his finger.

According to NBA Insider Shams Charania, the finger injury leaves Schroder's status for the regular season—beginning in less than a week—"up in the air." He's currently undergoing more tests to determine the severity of the injury.

It was only a few days ago that Schroder talked about how excited he was to be back with the Lakers, and how it was new head coach Darvin Ham that was the determining factor for his re-signing with the team.

Schroder was with the Lakers in the 2020-21 season, averaging 15.4 points and 5.8 assists. But he left as a free agent, and settled for a mid-level exception contract with the Boston Celtics last season, and was dealt to Houston to finish the year.

In his 9-year career, he's averaged 14.2 points and 4.7 assists. He rejuvenated NBA teams' interest in his play with an impressive performance for Germany at EuroBasket this summer.

The Lakers still have Patrick Beverley, Kendrick Nunn and Russell Westbrook at the point to divvy up the minutes until Schroder returns.
