Atlanta Hawks Sign Free Agent 14-Year Veteran

The Atlanta Hawks continue to re-tool their roster this offseason, agreeing to terms with a veteran of 14 NBA seasons who has averaged double-digit scoring and solid long-range shooting.

Wesley Matthews spent three of the last four seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, playing a reduced bench role that saw him average just 15 minutes per game last year, and 3.4 points. But he still provided his typical solid defense and could hit the occasional three when needed.

Before he arrived in Milwaukee in 2020, he had registered nine straight seasons of double-digit scoring with the Portland Trail Blazers and Dallas Mavericks, and was the prototypical 3-and-D wing.

Matthews, going into his age-37 season, still has a reputation as a solid defender, and despite his undersized status at 6'4", can lock down opposing teams' top forwards or shooting guards. His three-point shooting has dipped in recent seasons, however, hovering below 34% for the last three years.

He'll be a nice depth piece for the Hawks and bring in some veteran leadership, as they try to rebuild their defense under head coach Quin Snyder.
