Boston Celtics Sign Top Defensive Wing

He was a solid contributor off the bench for the Cleveland Cavaliers, providing tenacious defense on the wing for 18 minutes a night. As a free agent, 26-year-old guard/forward Lamar Stevens brings to the court exactly what the Boston Celtics need, leading to a contract with the Eastern Conference contenders.

Stevens actually started 25 games for the Cavs last season, but doesn't provide much offense, and certainly isn't a 3-and-D presence, as his three-point shooting in three NBA seasons is practically non-existent (28% on just one attempt per game.) He finished last year averaging 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Despite the lack of offense, Stevens brings a much-needed defensive mindset to the Celtics.

As noted by C's beat writer Adam Himmelsbach, Boston is desperate to fill the toughness void left by the departures of Marcus Smart and Grant Williams.

Stevens went undrafted out of Penn State in 2020, but established himself in three seasons in Cleveland with his intensity at the defensive end.
