NBA Free Agent Rumors: One Major Contender Likely Off Blake Griffin's List

Six-time All-Star Blake Griffin has been linked to several teams in free agency this offseason, including the incumbent Boston Celtics seemingly one of the top contenders. But according to Boston beat writer Adam Himmelsbach, it appears that the Celts are off his list.

As reported in the Boston Globe, a source told Himmelsbach, “The Celtics would likely welcome a return by veteran big man Blake Griffin, who played well last year and was a strong locker room presence, but for now that appears unlikely as Griffin considers his future."

The news comes as a bit of a surprise, as Brad Stevens had spoken highly of Griffin this summer, and hoped for his return.

Griffin, in addition to being a veteran leader with the squad last year, posted useful bench numbers of 4.1 points, 3.8 boards and 1.5 assists, while shooting just under 35% from three.

From recent reports, it sounds like Griffin's "future" might actually include a return to his past. A Hollywood reunion is thought to be a possibility, as the Los Angeles Clippers possibly look to add another big man to their roster. Griffin was the high-flying finisher on the Lob City teams of a decade ago, and earned five straight All-Star berths while with the Clippers.

As for the Celtics, they'll have to consider other free agent big men still available, with names like Tristan Thompson, Taj Gibson, Bismack Biyombo and, dare we say it... DeMarcus Cousins still out there.
