Cameron Payne Signs To Back Up Another Future Hall of Famer

He was Chris Paul's backup for the last three years, and now Cameron Payne will get to play backup point to another future Hall of Famer in Damian Lillard, as the free agent has signed a deal with the Milwaukee Bucks.

It's a one-year deal for Payne, likely at the veteran's minimum, given the Bucks cap situation.

Payne was dumped by the Suns this summer in a cost-cutting move via a trade to San Antonio, as they needed the $6.5M he was owed this year to continue to build a roster around Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. The Spurs then released Payne, eating the $6.5 mill, making him a free agent.

Now the Bucks, who've paired Lillard with Giannis Antetokounmpo, have a solid playmaker off the bench. Payne averaged over 10 points and 4.5 assists over the last two years in Phoenix in just over 20 minutes per night. Last year, he shot 36.8% from long range.
