NBA Rumors: Multiple Teams Monitoring Donovan Mitchell
Talk emerged during the offseason about whether Donovan Mitchell would consider extending with the Cleveland Cavaliers after his current contract expires, or if he would become a trade candidate while the value is high and before he's able to walk away for nothing.
Rival NBA executives are monitoring Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell’s happiness in Cleveland. Mitchell is signed through next season before a $37 million player option for the 2025-26 season, which many around the league expect him to eventually decline.
So just how "happy" is Spida in Cleveland? The team lost a disappointing first-round series to the New York Knicks last spring in five short games. But it was just Year 1 with Mitchell. The Cavs are currently 10-8 but have looked good lately, winning 7 of their last 10 games. The young core around Mitchell of Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland continues to grow, so if they can build themselves into a true power in the Eastern Conference, Mitchell could still, potentially, decide to stay.
As Scotto notes, the Cavs are still hoping that they'll be able to extend Mitchell before his contract expires after next season (assuming he turns down that player option). But as soon as they get wind that he will probably turn them down, they could quickly pivot to try to land a boatload of talent to keep the party going in The Land around their young core.
