Recent LA Lakers Fan Favorite Signs in Puerto Rico

An interesting turn of events for former Los Angeles Lakers fan favorite Wenyen Gabriel. Just days after agreeing to a 10-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies to return to the NBA for the first time this season, it's been announced that the energetic forward has now signed on with a team in Puerto Rico.

The 26-year-old big man signed a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 contract with the Boston Celtics for the preseason, but he was released before the regular season began. He then spent most of the campaign with the Wisconsin Herd of the G League, averaging 16.6 points and 10 rebounds while blocking nearly two shots per game, displaying the tenacity and energy that Lakers fans grasped onto the previous season and a half. He even shot over 45% from long distance with the Herd, displaying a skill he'd shown little of in parts of four NBA seasons.

He's played two games with the Grizzlies thus far on his 10-day, averaging 4.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in 17 minutes per night.

Presumably, when his contract with the Grizz expires on March 17, he'll begin his deal with Vaqueros de Bayamon of the Puerto Rican League for the 2024 season.

In 147 career NBA games he's averaged 4.5 points, and 3.4 boards in about 13 minutes a night.
