Report: Cavaliers Said 'NO' To Spurs Trade Offer

The San Antonio Spurs recently added Chris Paul to be Victor Wembanyama's new point guard for the coming season. But word has emerged that they really wanted to obtain young star Darius Garland from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

But the Cavs weren't interested in moving on from Garland, and turned down the Spurs' trade offer.

Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reports:

Sources said San Antonio called various teams around the league exploring veteran guards who have still yet to enter their primes. Cavaliers All-Star guard Darius Garland was another talented ball-handler the Spurs called about, sources said, although Cleveland has rebuffed any inbound trade interest for Garland to date.

Fischer doesn't expand on what the Spurs offered, but they obviously made a quick pivot from trying to land a young lead guard, to the oldest and most decorated one on the market in CP3.

Wemby will learn plenty from the 12-time All-Star, who'll be entering his age-39 season.

As for Garland, the 2022 All-Star has had a slightly reduced role in the offense since the arrival of Donovan Mitchell, as the 24-year-old has seen his shots per game decrease the past two years (from 17.3 per game to 14.8), as well as his points per game (from 21.7 in his All-Star year to 18.0 this past season).

There was word that his agent, Rich Paul/Klutch Sports would be demanding a trade if Mitchell signed on for the long-term, which he has done this summer. But apparently, the Cavs have decided to keep Garland.
