Ex-Raptors Point Guard Signs With San Antonio Spurs

He was an afterthought for most of his first three and a half years in the NBA, as he was never able to catch on to a regular role, or even any type of rotation role at all, while with the Toronto Raptors. Now, after spending last season split between the Raptors, New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons, Malachi Flynn will have a chance to hook up with Victor Wembanyama with the San Antonio Spurs.

It's a one-year, non-guaranteed deal for the former first-round pick (29th overall, 2020 Draft), as he'll try once again to prove himself as a potentially viable NBA point guard.

Over his first four seasons in the league, he's averaged 5.5 points and 1.9 assists in his 213 games played, getting on the floor for 14.2 minutes a night. He's shot 33.4% from three-point land.

The 26-year-old, standing 6'1", has had all sorts of trouble scoring the ball, with the eye-popping exception of one game with the Pistons late last season, when he exploded for 50 points against the Atlanta Hawks.

Of course, Flynn went back to scoring 3 points in each of the next two games, and never scored above 12 in any of his remaining games with Detroit, indicating that the 50-piece was obviously an extreme outlier.

It won't be easy for Flynn to crack the Spurs roster, as they already feature five guards who'll be coming to camp, in Chris Paul, Tre Jones, Stephon Castle, Blake Wesley and Malaki Branham.
