Kawhi Leonard To The Warrriors in Wild Proposed Blockbuster

If the Golden State Warriors really, truly want to get themselves back into championship contention this season, they'll need a true superstar to play alongside Steph Curry. They tried to land Paul George, and they sniffed around Laurie Markkanen.

And would the Los Angeles Clippers, who have been disappointed by Kawhi Leonard not being available enough in his five years there, finally decide to pull the plug on the Kawhi experiment?

If you buy all of the above, then Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report has a wild blockbuster trade to sell you. He proposes this deal, which would get Kawhi to San Francisco.

Golden State Warriors Receive:
  • Kawhi Leonard
Los Angeles Clippers Receive:
  • Andrew Wiggins
  • Gary Payton II
  • Kevon Looney
  • Moses Moody
  • 2028 first-round pick (unprotected)
  • 2030 first-round pick (protected 1-3 and 21-30)
  • 2029 first-round swap

This mock trade could give Kawhi a chance to go back to the Finals against the team that he destroyed there five years ago, when his Toronto Raptors beat the Warriors in six games.

And as Hughes writes, "If the Warriors were willing to offer Paul George a four-year, $212 million extension, they should be just as comfortable paying the remaining $150 million on Kawhi Leonard's deal."

Curry is still at the tail end of his superstar window, and the Dubs want to give him another chance to get a ring, and they'll need to roll the dice to try to make it happen. Bringing in a two-time NBA Finals MVP could be the ticket. IF Leonard is able to stay healthy, of course.

As for the Clippers, they get a huge package in return, taking on three parts of the Golden State rotation. In addition, they get much-needed flexibility moving into the future, as both Looney and Payton are on expiring deals.

Wiggins has three years left on his contract, as does Kawhi, but at just slightly over half the cost. In addition, he's usually far more available than Leonard, as Wiggins has played at least 70 games in eight of his 11 seasons. Kawhi hasn't played 70 games once in the last eight years.

But all the Dubs would need him for is about 24 games in the spring.
