Phoenix Suns Add Another Point Guard with Former 1st-Round Pick

After spending the 2023-24 season without a true point guard, and realizing that it cost them dearly, the Phoenix Suns have made it a point to shore up the 'one' spot this offseason, and they've done it in a major way.

The Suns got a steal of a deal when they were able to sign the best pure point guard on the free agent market in Tyus Jones to a minimum contract. He should be the starter and their chief floor general. They also brought in seven-year veteran Monte Morris for some backup at the point.

Finally, on Friday, they went a step further, and added even more depth at the position, signing recent first-round pick TyTy Washington.

It's a two-way contract for the former Kentucky point guard who hasn't yet made his mark in the NBA. He only got into 11 games last season with the Milwaukee Bucks, and 31 with the Houston Rockets the year before. He was the 29th overall pick by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Washington really showed out in the G League last season, however, averaging 21.3 points and 8.3 assists with the Wisconsin Herd, while shooting 42.6 % from three-point land. The Suns hope to tap into that potential, and perhaps playing in his hometown of Phoenix can help him find his groove in the NBA.

The Suns spent most of last season using Devin Booker and Bradley Beal at the point, which took both of them out of their strengths, and left the team with a disappointing season. They were swept out of the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
