Breaking: Memphis Grizzlies Make Big Decision on Derrick Rose

Former MVP Derrick Rose was brought in last season by the Memphis Grizzlies as a mentor for mercurial young star Ja Morant. But it appears that after just one year, Rose's day is done in Memphis.

Insider Shams Charania has reported that the Grizzlies are waiving Rose.

The soon-to-be 36-year-old missed the last two months of the 2023-24 campaign due to back and groin injuries. It's unclear what his status is on his recovery from those issues this summer.

Rose played just 31 games (seven starts) last season in Memphis, averaging 8.0 points and 3.3 assists, while playing 16.6 minutes per game.

According to New York Knicks insider Ian Begley, "Memphis let Rose out of his contract. Look for (him) to provide an update on what’s next for him later this week".

Rose spent the previous 2½ seasons with the Knicks before heading to Memphis last year.

After winning the NBA's Rookie of the Year, and then the league's MVP in just his third season, plus three All-Star berths, a torn ACL derailed the point guard's career, and he never had the same explosiveness again.

He's averaged 17.4 points and 5.2 assists across his 15 seasons, but has slowed down considerably the past couple of years.

Stefan Bondy of the Post says that Rose considered retiring last summer, so it's certainly possible that we may have seen the last of D-Rose in the NBA.
