Surprising News on Kevin Durant and Phoenix Suns

Kevin Durant is eligible for a one-year extension at $60 million as we approach Monday's deadline ahead of the 2024-25 season. He has two years left on his current deal at an average annual salary of $53 million. According to NBA Insider Shams Charania, however, there will not be an extension forthcoming this season for Durant.

But that's not because he has wandering eyes once again and is looking to move on as we've seen so often from KD in the past. Per Shams, it's actually because he and the team want to wait until next offseason when he can sign a two-year extension.

"Kevin Durant has expressed publicly and privately how much he loves Phoenix, and the Suns obviously want this iteration of the team to work, and they're all-in on this season," reports Charania.

"Next summer, he's going to be eligible for a two-year, upwards of $120 million extension. So that's really where Durant and the Suns' focus has been. They've both been focused on getting a deal done in the two-year range, not one year."

Durant was traded to Phoenix midway through the 2022-23 season after he demanded out of Brooklyn. In his 83 total games with the Suns, the future Hall of Famer has averaged 27 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists, while shooting 43.4% from three-point range.

The Suns, however, have won just one playoff series in that time, and last year were swept out of the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

For the $161 million they're paying KD, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal per season (never mind the rest of the roster), the Suns are hoping for a lot more in the next couple of seasons ahead.
