NBA Trade Rumors: 3 Championship Teams Have Interest in Signing Lonnie Walker IV
Former first-rounder and six-year veteran Lonnie Walker IV wasn't getting the offer he was looking for in the NBA and decided to sign a deal in Lithuania. He does have an opt-out, however, to take an NBA offer up through mid-February.
Insider Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report says Walker had various options overseas, and still has confidence he'll eventually land an NBA job this season.
There is confidence from Lonnie's side that he will potenntially have several (NBA) options once trades get done and roster spots are open (after the Feb. 6 trade deadline).
Here are 3 teams that are the favorites to land Lonnie:
Boston Celtics
Walker was in training camp with the defending champion Celtics this fall, but didn't make the roster. "I would still keep an eye on Boston as a potential home for him," says Fischer. "The Celtics were a team last February that was checking in on Walker when he was a member of the (Brooklyn) Nets," and that interest was obviously still there this fall.
Milwaukee Bucks
"The Bucks will definitely still have needs to fill, someone who can defend on the perimeter," says Fischer. "Lonnie Walker could potentially be someone to keep an eye on, as he was on the Bucks' radar at the last trade deadline."
The Bucks are off to a horrendous 1-6 start to the season, a far cry from their heady championship days of 2021, and they'll be looking for any kind of improvements they can find as the season goes along.
Denver Nuggets
Yet another recent championship team has also been added to the mix of teams interested in Walker. NBA Insider Marc Stein wrote in his latest column that "Denver has emerged as a team to watch alongside Boston for Lonnie Walker's potential NBA return as the season unfolds."
The Nuggets are desperate for some scoring off the bench.
Walker, the 18th overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2018 NBA Draft, has averaged nearly 10 points per game in his 322 NBA games, in about 20 minutes a night. He's also shot it at 35.6% from three-point range.
