Breaking: Dennis Schroder Traded to Western Contender

According to several sources around the NBA, the Brooklyn Nets have completed a trade with the Golden State Warriors for lead guard Dennis Schroder.

Insider Shams Charania reports that the deal includes Warriors' injured guard De'Anthony Melton's expiring contract as well as three second-round picks going to the Nets, in exchange for Schroder and one second-rounder.

The trade can be officially completed on Sunday when Melton becomes trade-eligible. He is necessary for this deal, as Schroder is on an expiring $13M contract, so the Warriors would need to send north of $12.5M in salary back. Melton makes $12.7M but is out for the season.

This move, in addition to getting the Dubs the extra scorer they’ve needed, also keeps them slightly under the first tax apron.

But the twist to this impending deal is that it could have been a lot larger, except the Warriors were not willing to surrender Jonathan Kuminga in order to get Cam Johnson from the Nets as well, according to Evan Sidery.

Schroder would make a tremendous complement behind Steph Curry in the backcourt. The German point guard is having an excellent season in Brooklyn, averaging 18.4 points with 6.6 assists and a 38.7% mark from outside the arc.

He is one of just seven players in the league this season averaging 18+ points, 5+ assists, while shooting at least 45% from the field, 35% from three, and 85% from the free-throw line.
