Lakers Eyeing Timberwolves' Big Man As He Seeks New Contract

The Minnesota Timberwolves face a pivotal offseason with Naz Reid, their versatile big man, expected to decline his $15 million player option for 2025-26 and test free agency.

Reid has become a cornerstone for the Wolves, averaging 14.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists this season. Since stepping into the starting lineup, he’s been even more dominant, putting up 20.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

However, Minnesota’s recent struggles—losing four of their last five games and sitting as the #7 seed—have complicated their plans. The trade of Karl-Anthony Towns left Reid and Julius Randle to anchor the frontcourt

According to The Stein Line’s, Jake Fischer, teams won’t match Randle’s $30.9 million option in free agency, and he will likely re-sign with the Timberwolves.

If Randle stays, it leaves the cap-strapped Wolves with little room to negotiate a new contract for Naz Reid, who has a player option for next season but is reportedly seeking a more lucrative long-term deal.

Los Angeles Lakers poised to sign Naz

Enter the Lakers. With Jaxson Hayes and Alex Len failing to solidify the position, the Lakers have resorted to small-ball lineups, making Reid an ideal target.

Hayes brings high-energy impact off the bench, excelling as a rim-runner in transition and serving as a reliable lob threat for Dončić and James. In contrast, Alex Len has struggled to find his footing with the Lakers, scoring just 4 points in 35 minutes and looking completely out of sync.

Reid's ability to score inside and stretch the floor would address their biggest weakness as they aim to contend with Luka Dončić and JJ Redick.

Looking ahead

The 2025 offseason will be a defining moment for Reid and the Wolves. Will he stay loyal to Minnesota, or will the Lakers swoop in to secure their missing piece?

One thing is clear: Naz Reid’s decision will send shockwaves across the NBA.
