NBA News: NY Knicks Sign Little-Used PJ Tucker to Multi-Year Extension
After signing a couple of 10-day contracts with the New York Knicks, PJ Tucker has gotten into only one of 10 games—and just for two minutes of garbage time, at that. Nevertheless, the 14-year-veteran has landed himself a new multi-year deal with the Knicks, signing a two-year contract that runs through the rest of this season plus the playoffs, and next year.
Free agent PJ Tucker plans to sign with the New York Knicks on a 10-day contract, sources tell ESPN. The 14-year NBA veteran held discussions with multiple teams over the last week. Per Shams Charania, the deal has a team option for 2025-26.
Per Stefan Bondy in the New York Post, "Tucker understood upon signing that playing time wasn’t guaranteed, but (he would be counted on) as a positive locker room presence, specifically for his leadership and experience on a younger roster".
“A lot of times... young guys and stuff on the bench, they’re not going to [encourage and motivate teammates]. They’re not going to have your back like that,” Tucker told Bondy when he first signed on March 10. “So it’s always good to have vets and like-minded guys that just have each other’s back."
Tucker sat out the entire season this year as a member of the LA Clippers, waiting for them to trade him. He was pinned to the Clips' bench and a complete non-factor for all but 28 games the previous season as well.
But he does have plenty of playoff experience to bring the Knicks' bench and locker room, with 104 postseason games under his belt, starting in 90 of them. That includes a pivotal veteran role on the 2021 Milwaukee Bucks championship squad. He'll try to bring all of that experience to the Knicks' youngsters as they head into the playoffs.
New York is 6-4 since Tucker's arrival, and hold down the 3rd seed in the Eastern Conference, which is where they'll finish the regular season, failing any colossal collapse.
