NBA Trade Rumors: 'Several' Teams In On Pursuing Zion Williamson This Summer
After yet another season spent largely in street clothes, will Zion Williamson finally get shipped out by the New Orleans Pelicans? According to rumors, "several" teams are in on pursuing the former No. 1 overall pick.
After playing an astounding (for him) 70 games last season, Zion is back down to 28 games this year, and once again, folks are discussing what kind of trade value he would have.
Per Tim MacMahon on ESPN's Hoops Collective podcast:
There’s some teams that would have significant interest.
His colleague, however, wasn't so sure just what the Pelicans would be able to get back for the star forward who has spent far more time injured than on the court over the course of his career.
"I still don't know how much they can actually get for him based on his injury history," replied Brian Windhorst.
After missing most of the first half of the season, Williamson has made it back into the lineup for 18 of the Pels' last 23 games, and has been playing like the beast he can be, averaging 24 points, 7 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.4 steals.
Before Zion came back in January, MacMahon said, “Somebody told us then the goal is to ramp him up and restore his value, whether that’s for the Pelicans or another team. And he’s handling the first part, to his credit, he is absolutely handling the first part.”
But again, he's played more than 29 games in a season only twice in his six years in the NBA. He has three years remaining on his contract, averaging about $42M per year. However, none of those years are guaranteed, and each year only kicks in if Williamson is not waived by the team by a certain predetermined date (July 1st this year).
