Damian Lillard Makes Bold Statement On NBA Future Amid Concerning Injury
Damian Lillard is making encouraging progress in his recovery from a concerning blood clot issue. The Milwaukee Bucks star faced a serious health scare after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right calf on March 25, forcing the nine-time All-Star to sit out since then.
However, reports on Thursday revealed that Lillard has been medically cleared for basketball activities, including shooting drills and light running.
While this is a promising step forward, there’s still no official word on when he’ll return this season as the Bucks gear up for the playoffs.
For Milwaukee fans, the silver lining is Lillard’s own confidence in his longevity. Now in his 13th NBA season, the 34-year-old guard has boldly stated that he plans to play for at least five more years before retiring.
"I definitely don’t see myself as somebody who’s just hanging on," Lillard said on the debut episode of Austin Rivers’ "Eye for the Game" podcast. "I know I’ll be able to play until I’m 39, 40."
Lillard also made it clear that he has no interest in transitioning into a reduced role. The Bucks’ point guard intends to remain a key contributor even as he gets older.
"I could play and be a starter until that point—especially with the way the game is now. You’re starting to see players playing longer and longer," he added. "[Chris Paul], [LeBron James]—you’re seeing them. They might not be the same as they were at 26, but they’re still elite players. Because they take care of themselves. I take care of myself. I don’t live a hard life."
Currently, Lillard is under contract with the Bucks for two more seasons after this one, with a Player Option for 2026-27. But based on his recent comments, it’s clear he’s eyeing at least one more contract before calling it a career.
