Houston Rockets Linked To 6'7" GSW Power Forward In Off-Season Shakeup
The Golden State Warriors’ blockbuster acquisition of Jimmy Butler on February 5 may have satisfied superstar Stephen Curry, but the move has come at a cost for rising forward Jonathan Kuminga.
After suffering a serious ankle injury that sidelined him for weeks, Kuminga now faces an uncertain future with the franchise. With free agency approaching, a move to the New Orleans Pelicans—where he could grow alongside Zion Williamson, could be in the cards.
Before his injury on January 4, Kuminga was performing at an All-Star level. The dynamic scorer and explosive athlete averaged 21.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in December while shooting 46.4% from the field and 35.4% from three.
However, since Butler’s arrival and his own return from injury, Kuminga has struggled to regain his offensive rhythm.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr recently acknowledged that Kuminga’s role has become less clear heading into the playoffs.
"Every game is different, and Jimmy’s arrival cut into Jonathan’s minutes at the four," Kerr said on 95.7 The Game. "Once Jimmy joined and we went on that 17-3 run, we leaned into lineups that worked. The combination of Jimmy, Jonathan, and Draymond [Green] hasn’t fit well—we need more spacing. Jonathan has handled it well, but we’re going with what gives us the best chance to win."
With Kuminga emerging as a potential sign-and-trade candidate this offseason, the 22-year-old could be on the move if the right offer comes along.
Meanwhile, the Pelicans—after a dismal 2024-25 season—should be looking to make major roster upgrades. Trading Herbert Jones, a savvy defender with solid offensive skills, could help New Orleans acquire Kuminga in free agency.
Adding a high-upside talent like Kuminga—a young champion with All-Star potential—would give the Pelicans a reason for optimism.
Once the offseason begins, the former lottery pick is sure to draw significant interest across the league.
