NBA Trade Rumors: Stunning 1-for-1 Blockbuster Would See Ja Morant Head East

There have been some rumblings down the stretch this season that perhaps Ja Morant is not happy with the direction of the Memphis Grizzlies. At the same time, rumors have been swirling for a couple of years that the Atlanta Hawks would be better off moving on from Trae Young.

Can you imagine a blockbuster move where the two superstar poing guards are traded for each other? Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report can. And he lays it out for us in this proposed trade:

Atlanta Hawks receive:

  • Ja Morant

Memphis Grizzlies receive:
  • Trae Young

The Grizzlies already made one stunning personnel move recently, firing head coach Taylor Jenkins with just a couple of weeks to go in the regular season. If the team now goes out and suffers an early playoff exit, the front office may look to make another earth-shattering move to really shake up the franchise.

Young offers the elite playmaking skills that Morant doesn't, as Trae is currently leading the NBA with 11.6 assists per game, and has averaged just a shade under 10 assists for his career. They may feel that he better suits their new offensive playbook, not to mention the fact that he's far more durable than Morant, who's missed huge swaths of games over the years.

On the Hawks' side of things, the team has stagnated over the course of Young's seven-year reign, and they might want to do a full reset themselves, pinning their hopes on the downhill and aerial dynamics of Morant to rejuvenate the franchise. As Buckley notes, Young has had his lowest usage percentage since his rookie season this year, indicating the team may be looking to move off of him.

Morant, certainly, could be a game-changer for Atlanta.

The Hawks are currently sitting in a Play-In spot in the East, in the 8-seed with a 37-41 record. Out West, the Grizzlies are 46-22, but find themselves in the same spot, in 8th place, due to a much tougher conference.
